Voting System Reform Policy
Summary
The Canadian electoral system, known as First Past the Post, is an all-or-nothing voting system where the number of ridings won determines which party forms the government, rather than the total number of votes received by each political party. If enough ridings are won, a government can have uncontested power without having majority support from voters. This flawed system tends to concentrate power between two major political parties, leading to inadequate political representation. It is clear that this status quo requires urgent reform. Within two months of taking office, the Moderate Party of Canada would introduce a newly developed proportional representation system, where the number of votes received, rather than the number of ridings won, would determine which political parties govern.
We call this new voting system:
Moderate Representation
